White Sands

The white sands national monument in New Mexico is very beautiful. Miles of white sand just stuck right in the middle of the desert. We did a nature walk into the desert and were not super impressed. The trail was just marked by a series of orange markers. Lame signs were posted with images of wildlife that we never saw. We did have fun writing in the sand. It was a super white and very fine sand and when we dug into it it was very cold to the touch. We drove further into the park and found another short trail. There was a boardwalk that overlooked some sands. It wasn't that fun either. It was however insanely static and Tim and I had fun shocking each other. Also, metal portions of the walk were sleek enough to run and slide on. That was fun.

Finally we drove to the heart of the White Sand dunes. Here was an endless sea of dunes. We saw a sign that said there was backcountry camping which made us sad because we had reservations that night at KOA. We stayed until sunset and took some pictures. The dunes weren't very good for rolling down, sadly. Pismo is better for that and a lot closer.

These mounds are formed when plants get buried. The climb up out of the sand leaving roots stalks behind. When the sand blows away, these pillars are held together by roots:
